Gardaí in Galway say that people who want to carry out street collections for charity must get a permit from them.

Chief Superintendent Donal Ó Cualáin told this week’s meeting of the City Joint Policing Committee that there’s a member of staff dedicated year round to inspecting applications for permits.

It followed concern by members of the committee that some bogus’ collectors are operating in the city.
