Concern is mounting that the Health Service Executives’ decision to impose a ban on recruitment at hospitals around the country, including Galway, will affect patient care.

The Irish Hospital Consultants Association says patients are being punished because of the cost cutting plan.

The recruitment freeze applies to permanent, temporary and replacement staff, along with locum and relief staff.

It’s aimed at preventing a spending overrun of around 140 million euro and the HSE West says it will be reviewed in October
