Sinn Féin has called for adequate resources to be committed to Galway City’s Irish Language Plan.

Before Christmas, outgoing Gaeltacht Minister and Galway West Fine Gael TD, Seán Kyne, confirmed that a draft Irish Language Plan for the city had been submitted to his Department at the end of October and that that it was being assessed.

Galway West Sinn Féin candidate Mairéad Farrell said: “As someone who has taken part in the consultation process for the Galway City Irish language Plan and made contributions to it, I understand that a huge amount of work has gone in to the research and planning behind this plan. Significant credit is due to Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Galway City Council and the team at NUI Galway for this work.

“I am concerned, however, that this whole Irish language planning process has been an attempt to fob off Irish language speakers and Gaeltacht communities without the intention of adequately funding the implementation of these the plans in their entirety.

“I am one of very few in Galway political life who were educated entirely through the medium of Irish in Galway City at primary and secondary level.
