Comharchumann Mhic Dara takes top Glór na nGael Award and host of prizes
Comharchumann Mhic Dara, An Cheathrú Rua, took this year’s top award – along with a cheque for €15,000 – at the annual Glór na nGael awards which took place in Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal last week.
It was a night to remember for the Conamara Co-Op which – in addition to that €15,000 top award and Foras na Gaeilge Trophy – also took first place and €3,000 in the Environmental Protection & Heritage. & Spirituality category, and two second places (with €2,000 for each) in the Gaeltacht, and Mental and Physical Health categories.
A prize fund totaling €80,000 was awarded to Irish Language community groupsand 3rd level societies in recognition of their achievements in the promotion and development of the Irish language.
Other big winners on the night were Ionad Naomh Pádraig, Dobhar, Coiste Forbartha Charn Tóchair, Derry and An Droichead, Belfast, among others.
The special award ‘Gradam Glór na nGael’ was presented to Bláthnaid Ó Brádaigh and Helen Ó Murchú, in recognition of their lifelong work in the Irish language sector.
Altan’s Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh was the special guest at the event, while funders and partner organisations were also present at the event including An Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, Foras na Gaeilge and Údarás na Gaeltachta.
The Glór na nGael competition was established over 60 years ago to recognise the work of community groups and committees across Ireland in the development of the Irish language.
