Main sponsors The Comer Group looking to acquire 85% share of club
An EGM of the Galway United Friends Cooperative has been called for next Wednesday night to discuss an offer from the club’s main sponsors to purchase a majority stake in the club.
Co-op members this week received notice from the co-op committee to say that Brian and Luke Comer are looking for an option for The Comer Group to acquire 85% ownership of Cumann Sacair na Gaillimhe cuideachta faoi theorainn ráthaíochta (company limited by guarantee), which trades as Galway United Football Club.
The Comer Group has bankrolled United since the club’s return to the League of Ireland in 2014 after a two-year absence – their support for the club saw the main stand in Eamonn Deacy Park renamed as The Comer Stand in 2014 in memory of their father, Luke senior, and their uncle, Michael.
The club is technically owned by the co-op, and the takeover proposal will need the approval of its members. There has been no mention of the sums involved, but co-op members are to receive details of what the proposal entails over the weekend.
