Cappataggle 2-19

Craughwell 0-17

Liam Collins fired over 0-12 as Cappataggle secured the U-20A1 title in an exciting contest in Ballinasloe last Wednesday evening.

Collins deservedly received the man-of-the-match award following this absorbing contest, but the performance of Aaron Gilligan in the Craughwell goal deserves great praise. The goalkeeper produced four point-blank saves, including a brilliant diving stop to deny Collins in the third quarter.

The eight-point margin did not accurately reflect the competitiveness of this encounter, but in a game where both sides enjoyed scoring bursts, it was one of Cappataggle’s that proved game defining.

With Craughwell leading 0-12 to 0-10, Cappataggle struck 1-6 without reply to seize the initiative. Even though Craughwell managed to reduce the arrears to four points, they were never able to get any closer as Collins managed to keep his side in front before Oisín Finn’s late goal sealed the win.

It was Cappataggle who started the stronger with Colins converting a free he won himself, before Jack Coughlan doubled his side’s lead. Craughwell responded when Adam Stewart won his side’s puckout before offloading to Oisín Quirke to fire over. Stewart levelled the contest with the first of his four points.
