The all-Irish secondary school Coláiste na Coiribe has regained top spot in the province in the annual schools league tables, where half of the ten highest ranking schools in Connacht were in the city.

Coláiste na Coiribe on the Tuam Road, which is to move to a new campus in Knocknacarra, was the country’s best performing mixed school in the country, according to the survey which are based on the proportion of students who gain places in university.

It narrowly knocked the all-girls Salerno Secondary School in Salthill off the top of the table compiled by the Sunday Times, where it had remained three years in a row, with the schools ranked 15th and 16th nationally.

Coláiste Iognáid (The Jes), Sea Road, was at number three in the province and 24th nationally, down from 17th in 2012.

The other Galway schools in the top ten in Connacht are Seamount College, Kinvara, ranked at 37 on the table, Colaiste Ghobnait, Inis Oirr, (49) St Joseph’s College, ‘The Bish’ (51) and Dominican College Taylor’s Hill (90).

The other Galway schools which made the top 20 in Connacht were as follows: Presentation College Athenry (99), Colaiste Chroi Mhuire, Spiddal  (110), Calasanctius College, Oranmore (113) and Scoil Mhuire, Ballinasloe (121) and Gairmscoil Einne Oileain Arann, Inis Mór.

The Bish was ranked number 14 in the top 20 boys’ schools in the State while Salerno was ranked at number 12 in the top 20 girls’ schools in the country.

Limerick had the two top schools in the country – Glenstal Abbey, the fee-paying all-boys school, grabbed the overall top spot, while the all-girls school Laurel Hill jumped eight places to take second.
