The Coastguard has issued a warning not to go out on exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, beaches and promenades along the Galway coastline this afternoon.

High winds and driving rain is lashing the countryside and coastal parts of Connemara with gusts of up to 140 kilometres an hour expected to hit the city around now.

Repair crews from the County council are still in the process of removing a fallen tree blocking the Westport road between Moyard and Letterfrack at the Rossleigue Manor Hotel.

Clifden Gardai are warning motorists the tree is down on a dangerous blind bend and are warning motorists to approach with caution.

A second tree is down at the Elm Tree Centre on the main Galway to Clifden Road in Clifden.

Trees are also reported down in Athenry, Aughrim, Lavally, Gurteen and Claregalway churchyard, trapping cars inside.

The Coastguard says the combination of high tides, storm-force winds and swollen seas and rivers may result in very dangerous conditions around the Galway coastline.
