Co-Ops committed to helping Galway farmers

Co-ops in the West are committed to sourcing feed for hard-pressed farmers as long as the fodder crisis continues.

That’s according to a spokesperson for Connacht Gold.

The co-op will take a load of imported hay to the mart in Maam Cross tomorrow, however most of the bales have already been pre-assigned to farmers.

The prolonged cold spell this year meant grass didn’t grow leaving farmers short of hay and struggling to feed livestock.

The Agriculture Minister has extended the fodder transport scheme until this day week, which means Irish farmers can buy feed at cost price.

A load of hay that arrived at the co-op in Tuam yesterday is understood to be gone, however Connacht Gold is expected another delivery of bales next Tuesday.

Also grass is beginning to grow and it’s hoped the worst will be over in the next ten days.

Joe Waldron from Connacht Gold, says they’re committed to helping farmers in Galway and the West.
