The bathing water quality in Clifden has failed to meet minimum mandatory standards according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Samples were taken from bathing water all over Ireland in 2008 and were assessed for compliance with two sets of EU standards.

While the majority of Galway’s bathing water areas received a status of “good”, Clifden received a “poor” rating.

This is due to faecal coliforms being found in the sample taken there.

Na Forbacha, Spiddal Main Beach and the bathing place at Portumna all received a status of “sufficient”.

Galway city’s two beaches, Salthill and Silver Strand have been rated as “good”.
