UG Mystics and Maigh Cuilinn gave their respective top-flight survival hopes a massive boost at the weekend with gutsy wins as the national leagues edge towards the concluding stages.

Mystics took the honors in a thriller with Fr Mathews on Saturday afternoon in the university’s sports centre in a game that went to triple-overtime and saw the visitors finish with just four players on the court due to foul-outs.

There was similar drama at the same venue on Sunday when Maigh Cuilinn edged past St Vincent’s to move off the foot of the table thanks to four points in the final minute; while at the other end of the table, UG Maree took on Eanna in a repeat of last month’s cup final, and once again got the better of the Dublin side to remain at the top of the standings.

It took three periods of overtime to eventually separate the sides, as Mystics dug deep to show tremendous character in recording just a second win of the season on Saturday with Hazel Finn and Kara McCleane scoring the game-winning four points in the final 40 seconds to seal the win.

The home side looked in trouble at half-time when, having led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter, they found themselves trailing 45-35 at the midway point, but rather than panic, they put in a stunning third quarter, hitting 23 points and holding the Cork side to just eight to lead 58-53 heading into the final quarter.
