The classmates of a brave twelve year old wanted to show their solidarity with their friend as he battled a cancerous tumour – and their efforts help to raise over €1,750 for the hospital at which he was treated.

Even better, Keith Murphy from Newbridge near Mountbellew returned to Windfield National School after Christmas after he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in March last year.

His classmates had decided that they wanted to do something to show their solidarity for their brave friend.

So sixth class student Conor Conway got his uncle in the US to send over wristbands with the inscription ‘Pray for Keith’. They went on sale at outlets around the area and raised an impressive €1,775, after sports shops and clubs all got behind the venture.

The cheque was presented to Gerry Cully, development and promotion officer at Crumlin Hospital, who told his band of merry fundraisers how donations were down over €4m on previous years.

A condition of the donation is that it will go towards St John’s, the oncology ward in Crumlin which is currently being renovated.

Naturally Keith was delighted with his friends’ efforts – and he himself has made a full recovery from his illness.
