Clarinbridge rarely move out of third gear in a routine win

YOU couldn’t say they’re county champions in the waiting after it, but Clarinbridge did the needful to accumulate the two points on offer in their opening round fixture against a disappointing Mullagh side in Gort on Sunday evening.

Talked up around the county as potential winners of the Tom Callanan Cup this year given their strong runs the past two campaigns and abundance of underage talent, David Forde, in his first season in charge, oversaw his side to a five-point victory which should have been a whole lot more.

Mullagh brought very little to the party over the course of the hour. They tallied a meagre four-points from play and aside from Davy Glennon and Sean Hardiman (first half) were devoid of any threat whatsoever in attack.

Clarinbridge had 0-9 on the board inside 18 minutes and looked sharp without ever really exerting themselves seemingly in that period but from there until the end, even they fell some way off the pace such was the feeble challenge posed by Mullagh.

It must be remembered that Mullagh plied their trade in Senior A last year but on Sunday’s evidence, they’re well off hitting the heights of last year’s victories over Portumna and Cappataggle, but it is only the second week of April and the opening round of the championship.

Davy Glennon Snr’s charges will be a different outfit no doubt for what already appears a crucial second round tie against an Ardrahan side buoyed by an impressive opening round victory over Abbeyknockmoy.
