Galway Bay fm newsroom – A GMIT student, who pleaded guilty to hacking the Fine Gael website two years ago, has avoided a prison sentence.

21 year-old Darren Martyn of Cloonbeggin, Claregalway and co-accused, Donnacha O’Cearbhaill, Birr, Co. Offaly appeared in court today.

The pair pleaded guilty last July to criminal damage of the Fine Gael website in 2011, 7 weeks before the general election.

The two were ordered to bring 5 thousand euro each to court to give to the Fine Gael party.

Fine Gael decided that half the money would got to Pieta House while the other half would cover legal expenses.

Martyn and O’ Cearbhail were spared prison sentences and will not have criminal records.
