Claregalway revive hopes of advancing to last eight

OPPORTUNISTIC goals either side of half time gave Claregalway the impetus to dominate the remainder of a physically demanding contest against Caherlistrane at Tuam Stadium on Sunday evening, as Alan Moran’s side recorded a win that leaves group three wide open going into the final day.

The maths for both teams is now relatively simple. Avoid defeat against Tuam Stars and Claregalway will qualify for the last eight, while Caherlistrane will have to beat Killannin as their scoring difference is inferior by just one point. Two draws will see Claregalway and Tuam Stars advance.

If that highly unlikely scenario were to happen then Caherlistrane may rue the concession of two late goals, as Claregalway substitute Nathan Grainger sent Eanna Bane the wrong way from the penalty spot and then calmly finished another flowing move to the net from close range, a cameo which will have done his chances of inclusion from the start next time out no harm at all.

The final score was emphatic but Caherlistrane were genuinely right in this contest, maybe even getting the better of it, for the opening 25 minutes. Social distancing was very much at the back of every player’s mind as the collisions came hard and often in an opening ten-minute spell that saw two yellow and one black card produced.
