Clare man sentenced for rape of woman he met in Gort
Galway bay fm newsroom – A man who raped a woman, he met in Gort, has been sentenced to 7 and a half years in prison with the final 3 and a half years suspended.
47 year-old Thomas Egan from Kilmihill, Co. Clare was convicted last May of raping the 23 year old woman at a house in Tipperary in July 2010.
According to today’s Irish Times, the court heard that father-of-four, Egan approached the woman from Brazil on a street in Gort and asked her to clean his house.
He drove her to a house in Tipperary and outlined cleaning tasks for her.
Upstairs in the house he proceeded to rape her, though he claimed to Gardaí at the time that it was consensual.
The following day the woman made a complaint and returned to Brazil a short time later.
He offered 10 thousand euro in court to be forwarded to his victim.
Justice Barry White said he did not believe that the rape “had a profound psychological effect’ on the woman, based on the victim impact statement.
He said that the victim seems to be more interested in compensation.
However, he said Egan could not buy himself out of custodial sentence.
Justice White sentenced Egan to 7 and a half years in prison with the final 3 and a half years suspended.
