Clampdown on rogue taxis

SCORES of taxi drivers who are operating illegally in the city are expected to go ‘underground’ this week as the Taxi Regulator steps up its crackdown on unlicensed drivers in Galway for Race week.

The Taxi Regulator has confirmed that at least four Enforcement Officers will be on the prowl on the city’s streets this week to weed out the unlicensed drivers and to catch taxi drivers from other parts of the country – who are not licensed to operate in Galway – who travel west to cash in on the Galway Races cash bonanza.

The Taxi Regulator has just nine Enforcement Officers operating in the country and local legitimate taxi drivers in the city – who depend on a good Race week for their yearly income – have welcomed the fact that half of them will be swooping on their illegal competitors.
