A new programme is to be introduced for all city food outlets later this year as part of a clamp-down on the dumping of cooking oil in the drainage system.

A version of the planned Fats, Oils and Greases programme (FOG) is already being operated by Dublin City Council in a bid to improve the efficiency of its drainage network.

At a special meeting this week where the effects of the severe weather were debated, Director of Services Ciaran Hayes told Cllrs that a regime is to be introduced to all food businesses which would require them to be licenced to protect the network.

The details of Galway City Council’s Fats, Oils and Greases programme have yet to be determined.
