A city councillor has been accused of a ‘cheap publicity stunt’ over remarks he made about the free sale of heroin in Galway.

Councillor Frank Fahey told yesterday’s meeting of the joint policing committee that the drug is being given out for free in certain parts of the city.

However, Councillor Niall McNelis is accusing his council colleague of making unfounded comments at an opportune time.

Councillor McNelis said Gardaí should have been informed earlier about heroin allegations.

Figures provided by Gardaí show that 10 thousand euro worth of heroin was seized in the first eight months of the year.

In response to Councillor McNelis, Councillor Frank Fahey, who is also a taxi driver, says his comments were not made for publicity reasons.
