Around 20% of staff recruited at Galway City’s two public hospitals during Covid-19 were in the areas of management and administration.

Saolta University Healthcare Group has confirmed that some 208 administrative staff and managers were hired at Galway University Hospitals (UHG and Merlin Park), since March 2020.

That represents 19.6% of the total number of staff recruited since the onset of Covid-19.

The Connacht Tribune understands that consultants at GUH have complained that too many administrative and management staff have been recruited – when medical staff were stretched.

“More and more admin and management staff were being taken on during Covid while the medical staff – consultants, doctors and nurses – were almost at breaking point with staff shortages, some Covid related,” said one source at UHG.

Saolta said that since March 2020, it hired 517 nursing and midwifery staff at GUH and some 254 health and care professionals.

The new nursing and midwifery staff included students at UHG, as well as staff at the Covid-19 vaccination centre in Ballybrit. .
