The metering of houses in the city for water charges is not expected to commence until the second half of next year, Irish Water have confirmed to the Galway City Tribune.

Up to 24,000 meters will be installed in phase one of the metering project for the city that will start in the third quarter of 2015, according to Irish Water.

The project seems likely to run for close to a year with a projected finishing date of mid-2016.

Preliminary site and mapping work has already been completed by staff of Galway City Council with a private contractor due to carry out the meter installation work.

Water bills will start arriving in the letter boxes of householders from next January – where meters aren’t installed an estimated billing system will be put in place.

“Phase 1 of the metering project is due to commence in Galway City in Quarter 3, 2015, where there are approximately 24,000 meters to be installed. This phase is expected to be completed by mid-2016,” Irish Water said.
