A Nigerian taxi driver has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a student in the city last year.

36 year old Tope Adejuyigbe, from Sandyview Drive, Riverside, had denied sexually assaulting the then 19-year-old woman in the early hours of February 24th 2010, during a two-day trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

The young woman told the jury she went to Eyre Square around 1.20am on the night in question and got into a taxi driven by the accused.

She said he got out and took the taxi sign off the roof, placed it in the back seat and then got back into the car, locked the doors and sexually assaulted her.

Adejuyigbe told the jury the woman made a pass at him and told him she wanted to have sex with him in the car but then changed her mind and asked him into her house for coffee.

The jury of seven men and five women took just over an hour and a half to find the accused guilty.
