City’s water supply under threat

GALWAY City could be hit with water shortages by the end of this week if management of Galway County Council doesn’t give a “meaningful commitment” to engage in talks to resolve a dispute with local authority workers who went on strike on yesterday, a leading trade unionist has warned.
Talks between management and Trade Union SIPTU broke down without an agreement last Thursday and as a result up to 400 Council workers went ahead with their planned strike yesterday.
The industrial action, which was agreed after a secret ballot, is a result of up to 40 workersbeing laid off last month following the Government’s decision to slash funding made to the Local Authority.
