City policing committee wants more legal advice on horses problem
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City’s Joint Policing Committee wants an official from the Department of Agriculture to attend a meeting to explain the legislation regarding the housing of horses.
It follows queries by Councillor Terry O’ Flaherty to Gardaí about what power they have to seize animals housed in gardens in urban areas.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says that the legislation relates to cruelty to animals, and that they must have a certain amount of land.
If Gardaí get a call, he said they will attend and alert a vet if necessary.
But he added that it’s a bigger issue and they have to think about where they would put a horse if they seized it.
Community representative Margaret O’ Riada said more should be invested in educational projects and that vets are willing to help advise people how to care for horses.
Chief Superintendent Curley says Gardaí would welcome any initiative to deal with horses in urban areas.
Senator Trevor O’ Clochartaigh requested that an official from the Department of Agriculture explain the legislation.
Councillor Terry O’ Flaherty says she supported the call for more explanation to be given in relation to seizing horses.
