CITY OFFICIALS URGED TO RECONSIDER CHANGES TO SUNDAY BURIALS
Date Published: 08-Jan-2013
City officials are being urged to reconsider a decision to stop Sunday burials from this year.
It follows a motion put forward by Fianna Fail City Cllr Ollie Crowe at a meeting last evening (Jan 7) where he said all necessary steps should be taken to retain a seven day service.
City officials are now to review the burial service and bring forward a possible solution at the next meeting of the local authority next month.
The decision to cut the Sunday service was taken as the City Council is in breach of the Working Time Directive.
A spokesperson for the City Council says the only solution is to hire more staff and an application has been put forward to the Department to suspend the morotorium in relation to this area so that staffing issues could be resolved.
Cllr Ollie Crowe says any staffing issues must be addressed to protect what he describes as a key community service.
