City officials have advised members against placing a replica statue of renowned Galway writer Padraic O’Conaire in the square as they say this may lead to "confusion for the general public".

The original statue was removed from Eyre Equare in 2004 and is now located at the City Museum, where officials say its new home has proved to be "a tremendous succes".

Galway City Council has drafted estimated costings of 45 thousand euro for a replica bronze limestone statue and associated groundworks, following a request from Councillors.

The erection of a plaque with an inscription was also proposed and quoted at 5 thousand euro.

City Cllr Padraig Conneely has called for a further rethink on the matter and says placing a replica will NOT confuse the public who want the replica back in place.
