City oarsmen on the way to Beijing

CITY oarsmen Alan Martin and Cormac Folan booked their boat’s place at next year’s Olympic Games when their heavyweight four produced a storming third – quarter performance to finish fourth in the ‘B’ final at the World Rowing Championships on Saturday.

With five of the six crews set to book automatic places in Beijing, the Irish managed to pull clear of Australia and Belarus to make a little bit of Irish rowing history.

Together with Sean Casey (Muckross) and Sean O’Neill (St. Michael’s), they have become the first Irish heavweight crew in almost 20 years to reach the Olympic Games.

With the Czechs, the USA, and Germany a full length clear, the Irish gave their all over the final 300 metres to edge out Belarus and condemn the Australians to the dreaded sixth place.
