Galway Bay fm newsroom – An inspector from the Mental Health Commission has found that patients of the mental health unit in Galway city must sleep in a waiting room.

This is despite a new 2.5 million euro dedicated unit being used as office accommodation.

The inspector visited the Department of Psychiatry at University Hospital Galway, where they found that each resident did not have an individual care plan.

The inspector found that an ante-room was used intermittently as a bedroom.

This is while a purpose built high-dependency unit at the lower ground floor, which includes seclusion facilities has not been opened.

It’s now being used as office accommodation for clinical staff.

The inspector also found that the standard of records maintenance was inadequate for the third year in a row.
