City Mayor says property tax cut could mean rates increase
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Mayor Donal Lyons of Galway says any cut in the property tax by the City Council would result in rates increases and cut in Government grants for the local authority.
Galway City was cited as one of only a handful of local authorities that might be in a position to cut the property tax according to a survey by the Sunday Business Post.
But Mayor Donal Lyons says, that while the adoption of the budget will be a matter for the members of the city council, any cut in the property tax would impact on council services.
He also says this could mean higher rates and a cut in Government grants to the city council at a time when it needs funds in it’s bid for the European City of Culture award.
