City Manager urged to reconsider refuse privatisation
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The City Manager has been urged to reconsider his decision to privatise the refuse service.
There was heated debate at last evening’s meeting of the local authority where Cllr Collette Connolly raised a motion deploring the decision.
She also urged Brendan McGrath to reconsider the decision and recognise the views of elected members as outlined in the action programme for effective local government.
The motion was supported by eight members with six against.
Last month, an executive decision was made to privatise the existing local authority service when Cllrs were informed it’s no longer financially sustainable.
City Manager Brendan McGrath told members last evening that the process is already in train and that he thinks there will be a successful bidder.
Cllr Tom Costello also questioned the impact on the composting facility in Carrowbrowne.
Director of Services Kevin Swift said the City Council is the single customer of the facility at present but in the event the refuse service does cease, that would create more capacity for others who wish to use it, subject to a viable gate fee.
Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Cllr Collette Connolly said a Section 140 motion concerning the refuse service has been withdrawn following legal advice.
