Galway Bay fm newsroom – City Manager Brendan McGrath is being urged to provide a written report on the level of storm damage caused to the city over recent weeks.

City Cllr Catherine Connolly says the damage must be assessed in detail so that the necessary government assistance can be sought.

She has asked that a report be furnished to Cllrs at this month’s meeting of the local authority to address the current crisis situation.

Two Garda cars are on duty at the promenade in Spiddal as waves about 20 feet high throw rocks and debris onto the road.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to stay away from coastal areas until the high winds and waves subside.

There are winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour in places – and an Orange weather warning is in place.

Spiddal local Pádraig Keady is at the pier and says it’s a highly dangerous situation with debris being thrown onto the public road.

The Promenade in Salthill from Blackrock to Grattan road has been closed by the City Council.

Spokesperson for City Hall Gary McMahon says high tide earlier caused some flooding in Salthill.
