Galway Bay fm newsroom – The city manager is to seek approval to appoint an Irish Language Officer for the city council.

However Brendan McGrath has pointed out to councillors that he would need extra funding to make such an appointment and doesn’t see that being given.

The proposal was made by Cllr Catherine Connolly and seconded by Cllr Terry O Flaherty at a meeting of the City Council.

The Manager said in an ideal world he would like to have an Irish Language Officer and to have the Urban Traffic Centre controlled on a 24 hour basis.

Brendan McGrath’s reference to the Traffic Centre was in response to Cllr Declan McDonnell who said there can be traffic flashpoints at any time of the day.

The manager stated the city council has lost 20 percent of its staff since 2008 and yet has had to maintain and add services in the interim.
