CITY MANAGER TO MEET CHIEF SUPERINTENDANT ABOUT OCCUPY GALWAY

Galway City Manager, Joe O’ Neill is planning to meet with the Chief Superintendent of Galway Garda Division, Donál Ó Cualáin about the ‘Occupy Galway’ camp in Eyre Square.

A private meeting between the City Manager and party whips, Councillors Padraig Conneely, Ollie Crowe, Niall McNelis and Catherine Connolly took place today.

The Manager conveyed that the Council has no power to legally move the demonstrators, who have been camped in Eyre Square since last October.

Councillor Padraig Conneely says that the Manager told them that it’s up to Gardaí to use their "discretionary" power to move the protestors.

The only other option available to the Council would be to seek an injunction.

Councillor Conneely says both sides seem to be passing the book on the matter.
