A father of six evaded prison by opting to join Alcoholics Anonymous when asked to do so by a visiting District Court judge at Galway District Court this week.

Before the court in custody was 27 year old Martin Corcoran of 307 Corrib Park, Newcastle.

He pleaded guilty to breaching the peace by being abusive and threatening to staff and rail users at Ceannt Station on February 2 last year.

Judge Eamon O’Brien asked Corcoran to consider joining AA or otherwise he would take a more serious view of the offence.

Corcoran immediately agreed to join AA and the judge then imposed a €200 fine on him for breaching the peace at Ceannt Station.
