City man jailed following assault on security guard
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A teenage father will spend Christmas in prison after being sentenced to ten months in prison for knocking a store security guard unconscious.
19 year old James Barrett, of 46 Beal Srutha, Ballybane, appeared in custody before Galway District Court.
At Galway District Court, Barrett pleaded guilty to assaulting a student, who was working as a part time security guard, at Centra, Bothar an Choiste, Headford Road, Galway on April 27th last.
The young security guard pursued Barrett who ran after being caught shoplifting.
Barrett turned around and punched him in the face, knocking him unconscious in the nearby car park.
Defence solicitor, Sarah O’Dowd said Barrett was highly intoxicated at the time and was sorry.
Judge Mary Fahy sentenced Barrett to ten months in prison for the assault and imposed two consecutive one-month sentences on him for failing to appear on two previous occasions to answer the charge.
A concurrent three-month sentence was also imposed on him for stealing from Boots on another occasion.
