A city man who witheld his rent to the city council in protest at the condition of a Traveller community centre next door to him, has escaped eviction.

William Canavan of 36 Fána Glas, Ballybane withheld over 2,700 euro in rent from the city council in order to force them to do something about the centre adjoining his home.

At Galway District Court this week William Canavan held up a cheque in court and told Judge Mary Fahy he had the rent ready but witheld it on principle to have his day in court.

Judge Fahy adjourned the case to the 3rd of March and Mr Canavan has agreed to resume paying his rent in the meantime.
