City housing list jumps to nearly 2,500

THE number of people seeking a house from Galway City Council has jumped by 419 in the space of just six months, according to a new report.

The Council housing waiting list stood at 2,442 at the beginning of this year compared to 2,023 in June 2008 which represents a whopping 21% increase – the bulk of the new applicants are turning to the Council for help because they are no longer able to afford private accommodation.

The increase was recorded despite the fact that currently there are 118 Council homes in the city that are lying vacant.
