City galleries host group shows

THE Summer Group Show at Salthill’s Norman Villa Gallery, which opens this Thursday, is showcasing work from established and up-and-coming artists from Galway and further afield.

There will be pieces from Tony O’Malley, Barrie Cooke and Brian Bourke, alongside work from younger artists such as David Keane, David Finn, Lisa Sweeney and Philip Lindey. In total, over 20 artists will be represented including Fr Michéal Noone, who is showing a small new collection of bronze sculptures.

That show runs until Saturday, August 28.

Meanwhile, across the city the Kenny Gallery is hosting Irish Craft Portfolio 2010, an exhibition featuring innovative and unique craftwork, from baskets to stained glass, from jewellry to ceramics, from calligraphy to textiles.

Local craftworkers Joe Hogan and Berina Kelly (baskets and jewellry respectively) are among the exhibitors, who also include Roger Bennett, Liam Flynn (woodturners); Cormac Boydell, Frances Lambe, Nuala O’Donovan and Marcus O’Mahony (ceramicists); Denis Brown (calligrapher); Terry Dunne (weaver); Bernie Leahy (textile artist); Kevin O’Dwyer (silversmith);

Angela O’Kelly (jewellery), Stephen Ó Briain and John Lee (furniture makers); Alva Gallagher, Catherine Keenan, Peadar Lamb and Killian Schurmann (glass).

The official opening will take place at The Kenny Gallery Liosbán Retail Park, Tuam Road this Saturday, August 14 at 2.00pm and the show will continue until September 9, with daily opening between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Saturday.
