City event to place spotlight on direct provision system
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A consortium of agencies and community organisations will gather in the city this week to raise awareness of the issue of Direct Provision.
The majority of asylum seekers spend about four years in direct provision.
The policy was originally intended as a short-term measure to cater for families awaiting decisions on their asylum applications.
There are two hostels in Galway providing the service – the Eglinton Hostel in Salthill and the Great Western.
The Galway Integration Consortium says over 360 people are currently living in these hostels – including 88 children.
The event takes place at 11am on Friday (May 9th) in the Menlo Park Hotel.
