City endures coldest winter for 14 years

DON’T to too surprised if you’ve used extra fuel or electricity this Winter to heat your home – according to the latest weather statistics, the city has endured its coldest December/January period since 1985.
During the month of January, we had 11 air frosts and 24 ground frosts but the cold and crisp conditions which prevailed for a good chunk of the month, meant that rainfall was only slightly above the average.
The coldest night of the month came on Tuesday, January 6, when the mercury dropped to -6° Celsius – that night the ground temperatures dipped to -11.2°C.
