Councillors consider zoning change on Corrib Great Southern site
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A city councillor will today raise a proposal to change the zoning on the site of the former Great Southern Hotel from enterprise and commercial, to residential use.
There have been ongoing calls to secure the future of the site following multiple incidents of anti-social behaviour and arson.
The site at the Dublin Road is jointly owned by the Comer Group and two members of the McHale family, and was registered as derelict in early 2017.
Independent City Councillor Declan McDonnell is to raise the motion to change the zoning from ‘enterprise, light industry and commercial’ to ‘residential’ use when the local authority meet for their ordinary meeting today.
He said the owners have had two meetings with planners on their vision for the site but zoning remains an issue.
Councillor McDonnell said the motion will kickstart the first step in the process which would take around six months to approve.
