City Councillors question low estimate to repair storm damaged areas
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Some city councillors are questioning the preliminary estimate of 782 thousand euro to repair storm damaged areas in Galway, saying it’s too low
Described as an ‘Irish tsunami’ by Mayor Padraig Conneely, the recent severe weather damaged public buildings, footpaths, ramps and beaches.
At last evening’s meeting of the local authority, the city council, Gardaí and emergency services were praised for their valiant efforts during the storm.
However, Cllr Peter Keane said he was surprised at the city based cost of three quarters of a million euro after the county council put its repair estimate at 18 million.
He added that in relation to the council report on winter storms, it was heavy on fact but light on solutions, with no suggestions to help affected businesses.
Cllr Catherine Connolly also expressed surprise at the repairs estimate saying it was ‘simply a drop in the ocean’
Senior engineer Billy Dunne told the meeting the funding was intended to get the city back to where it was before Christmas.
The estimate does not include costs to repair Leisureland in Salthill, with preliminary indications that it could be in the region of 500 thousand euro.
Chairman of Leisureland Cllr Donal Lyons says this figure could change.
