Galway city council has joined the swelling ranks of local authorities declaring themselves rendition-free.

It’s adopted a motion proposed by Cllr Collette Connolly last evening aimed at preventing rendition flights from passing through Galway Airport.

The city council has requested Galway Airport keep a register detailing aircraft operators whose planes have been implicated in the controversial rendition flights of prisoners.

It’s also requested the airport to contact the Garda if they have reason to believe an aircraft might be used to carry out rendition.

Other local authorities in Limerick, Derry, Kilkenny and Shannon have passed similar motions.

Galway Campaigns officer with Amnesty International Sarah Clancy is welcoming the move, which she says is important in the fight to protect human rights.
