CITY COUNCIL WARNED OF CLAMPDOWN ON NOXIOUS WEED
Date Published: 28-Aug-2012
The Department of Agriculture has issued a warning of a clamp-down on noxious weed in public areas across Galway city.
It follows concerns raised by local Councillor Padraig Conneely that the growth and spread of ragwort was not being tackled sufficiently.
Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has advised that all local authorities, including Galway City Council, have now been reminded of the importance of treatment measures and disposal in order to prevent the spread.
The Department is also actively seeking to enforce the provisions of the 1936 Noxious Weeds Act.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council says it’s one of few urban councils that has a continued focus on tackling the weed through the Parks department.
However Cllr Conneely says the matter deserves further attention now following the Minister’s intervention
