CITY COUNCIL TO CLAMP DOWN ON ABUSE OF WAIVER SCHEME

Galway city council is to investigate abuse of the bin charges waiver scheme and will introduce measures in the New Year to combat this practise

City manager Joe McGrath told last night’s meeting that a small number of people are abusing the free service

He gave the example of one household where a person living alone has rubbish four times above the average pay by weight

The manager further incensed councillors by refusing to say just how many households were involved, only saying it was a small cohort

Mr McGrath said he was standing by his comments and that the budget meeting WAS the appropriate forum as bin charges and waste form a major part of the estimates
