Galway city council has secured a High Court Order against a city quarry company preventing them from further breaches of planning conditions.

Mr Justice Paul Gilligan has ordered that Lackagh Quarries be restrained from carrying out excavation below 15 metres ordinance demarcation on any development on any part of Lackagh Quarries at Menlo in the city.

After over two years of legal wrangling, it took just twenty minutes to secure a High Court order against Lackagh Quarries.

Galway City council’s barrister John Gallagher asked Mr Justice Paul Gilligan to make an order that Lackagh Quarries be restrained from carrying out any excavation below 15 metres ordinance demarcation on any part of the quarry until planning permission is granted.

Responding on behalf of Lackagh Quarries, senior counsel Patrick Keane said any planning permission would be subject to an Environmental Impact Statement, which prevents going below 15metres.

Two Menlo residents were present in Castlebar Courthouse for today’s hearing.

Local homeowner Michael Tiernan is opposed to the quarry and said he’s very disappointed with the outcome.
