Replacing roundabouts along the city’s N6 route with traffic-light junctions is causing concern among some city councillors.

Consultant engineers, AECOM, are proposing to use 6 million euro of NRA funding to replace roundabouts along the N6 bothar na dTreabh over the next 18 months.

The idea has been compared to that of the controversial Moneenageisha junction at the Dublin road, which was built to replace a roundabout in 2009.

In a presentation to the City council last evening, AECOM consultant engineers claimed that upgrading the N6 route with junctions, would greatly improve journey times for motorists.

The first phase of the plan, which is on public display, involves replacing the Lynch roundabout at Briarhill with a traffic light junction.
