City Councillors have questioned the decision to hand back the majority of a bond to Volvo Ocean race organisers when parts of South Park are still in need of repair.

Director of services Ciaran Hayes told last evening’s meeting that around 15 thousand euro of the 25 thousand euro bond had been returned to Let’s do it Global.

Councillor Billy Cameron asked what the criteria was to return 15 thousand euro when they got a park handed back that was ‘not fit for purpose’.

Director of Services Ciaran Hayes said the 25 thousand euro was held on to by way of security for the event and this was a condition of the licence.

However, he said an estimation of repair works to be carried out at South Park had already been undertaken, and was expected to cost in the region of 4 thousand euro.

City Councillor Catherine Connolly said she believed the repair works would cost in excess of this figure.
