CITY COUNCIL MEETS TO ASSESS PLAN ON ECOLI OUTBREAK
Date Published: 23-Aug-2012
Galway City Council is holding meetings this morning to assess its plan on dealing with the E coli outbreak at Grattan Beach in Salthill.
The green flag has been taken down, and A4 notices have been put in the public notice boards at each side of the beach advising people not to swim there.
It follows water tests taken yesterday which showed elevated levels of Ecoli bacteria that breached EU mandatory permitted levels.
So far, the outbreak is confined to Grattan Beach and the rest of the bay is unaffected.
Ecoli can cause severe diarrohea particularly in young children and older people, and in a small number of cases can cause kidney failure.
The lack of warnings at the beach of the Ecoli outbreak is causing some distress among locals.
