Galway’s parking meters are set for an upgrade, according to Galway City Council.

Approximately 20 replacement Pay and Display meters have been budgeted for as they have ‘come to the end of life’, a spokesperson said..

“We’re also looking at pay by text,” Director of Services Gary McMahon revealed. This payment method is already used around Ireland and works by texting the duration of your stay, the location and your car registration to a designated number.

Although still in the planning phase, paying by text could be an advantage as tickets won’t have to be printed and paper in meters won’t have to be replaced, says Mr McMahon.

He pointed out that this payment method will be in ‘limited locations’ as they try it out and determine how successful it will be.

Sunday parking charges are also being implemented and signage explaining this has been erected. It is not in effect as of yet however, as machines are still being recalibrated.
